Introduction to Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT)
As part of our range of NDT capabilities, The WDC offer Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT). PAUT is similar to conventional Ultrasonic Testing (UT) methods, however there are some differences which we will discuss throughout this blog. We will also discuss the added benefits PAUT brings from traditional Radiographic Testing (RT).
What is PAUT?
PAUT is one of the most advanced NDT techniques. Probes in PAUT are made up of several elements as opposed to conventional UT which only uses a single-element probe when transmitting ultrasonic waves into the surface of a material. Also, in standard UT, fixed angles are used in the process, whereas in PAUT, there are a range of individual angles which can be manipulated to gather a more accurate detection of defects in a material.
The beams in PAUT are designed to be controlled or ‘pulsed’ individually at a variety of different angles, allowing them to be sized and navigated by the operator. Given the ability to manipulate these ultrasonic beams, it is easier to detect flaws and determine the quality of the material being tested.
The Advantages of PAUT
There are many significant advantages of PAUT over regular UT, some of them include:
- Higher flaw detection levels
- More accurate measurements
- Extremely effective in determining the thickness of materials
- Inspection of a larger surface in a shorter time period
- Digital feedback can be received instantaneously using the PAUT equipment
- Excellent reliability and repeatability levels
- Eliminates health and safety risks compared to other RT methods
